Philadelphia health officials resumed enforcement Monday of the city's smoking ban, which prohibits smoking in most public places, after relaxing efforts last month following changes to the ordinance. Under the Clean Indoor Air Worker Protection Law, smoking is banned in all indoor areas accessible to the public, including restaurants, bars, retail stores, office buildings, bingo halls, sports and recreational facilities and public workplaces. Sidewalk cafés are included in the ban. Specialty tobacco shops, tobacco-products-distribution businesses and lodging establishments (up to 25 percent of the sleeping quarters available for rent) are exempt from the ban. Private clubs, drinking establishments with limited food sales and some workplaces covered by pre-existing collective bargaining agreements are eligible to apply for waivers.
