I am writing to urge you to support meaningful FDA oversight of tobacco products. It is ridiculous to regulate the content and packaging of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese but not Marlboro cigarettes -- both made by Philip Morris.
Unlike all other consumer products, tobacco has continued to escape even the most basic oversight for public health and safety. Maybe that's why there are over 4,000 chemicals in a single cigarette, including arsenic, formaldehyde and ammonia.
Congress must also act to regulate tobacco marketing to children. Some children are becoming addicted to tobacco before they reach junior high – in fact, the average age of a new smoker is just 14-and-a-half years old.
Please support meaningful FDA legislation that is supported by public health groups.
